Matthew T. Spencer
Adjunct Counsel: Community Colleges
Matt Spencer has worked for more than 18 years in development and alumni relations roles within the community college, public university, private university, and community foundation sectors. Currently, Matt serves as Senior Executive Director of Advancement for University of Utah Health Academics, overseeing advancement operations for the university’s School of Medicine, School of Dentistry, College of Pharmacy, College of Nursing and College of Health.
Prior to his appointment at the University of Utah, Matt served as Associate Vice President for Development and University Advancement at Weber State University in Ogden, UT. Here, he oversaw a staff of fifteen, including all development officers across WSU’s colleges and functional areas, in conjunction with the university’s 125th Anniversary Campaign and advancement efforts that followed this campaign’s successful completion ($164.4M campaign dollars raised, 31% over goal). Previous to his appointment at Weber State, Matt was CEO of the Colorado Mountain College Foundation, managing a staff of ten and unprecedented fundraising efforts for the community college’s network of eight campuses across the Central Rockies and Western Slope of Colorado. Non-anomaly gift fundraising at CMC increased by 40% under Matt’s leadership and CMC was recognized as a Top 40 fundraising shop among 850 American community colleges surveyed in 2012.
Matt was Vice President of Membership & Development at the Vail Valley Foundation from 2006 until 2010, leading that organization to overall philanthropic revenue increases of 17% over his three and a half year tenure. In this role, Matt honed his fundraising skills for the arts, securing more than $750,000 for the Vail International Dance Festival and more than $1M for the Vilar Performing Arts Center annually; this, in addition to more than $4M per year for other areas of the Vail Valley Foundation’s mission.
As Associate Director of Development for the Daniels College of Business at the University of Denver (DU) from 2004-2006, Matt successfully directed a $25 million comprehensive campaign for the School of Hotel, Restaurant and Tourism Management and served as a major gift officer for various other schools within the Daniels College. Before coming to DU, Matt was the Associate Director of Development at the Sigma Alpha Epsilon Foundation where he oversaw a $1.1 million annual fund and managed a portfolio of chapter advised funds.
Matt has a Bachelor of Arts Degree in International Studies from Willamette University in Salem, OR; where he also played varsity football and spent time studying abroad at both the University of Havana (Havana, Cuba) and the University of San Francisco (Quito, Ecuador). Matt later earned a Master’s of Science in Sports Organization from Miami University in Oxford, OH and it was here that he first began his career in development as a graduate assistant within the Miami Red and White Club (the fundraising arm of the Miami Athletic Department).
In 2011, Matt was named Most Outstanding Fundraising Professional by the Association of Fundraising Professionals – Colorado Chapter. He lives in Ogden, UT with his wife, Natanee and son, Talon.
