Sandy Karuschak has nearly three decades of experience with Chicago’s leading nonprofit cultural institutions. She has a deep and highly successful track record in all facets of development and capital campaigns, board management and engagement, supporting leadership transitions, and staff team building.
As Director of Development for 19 years at internationally-renowned Steppenwolf Theatre Company, Sandy was responsible for building the development infrastructure for annual campaigns consisting of patron donations, grants and sponsorships, major and planned gifts, and special events that resulted in consistent growth in fundraising results. During her time there she also led the campaign strategy and execution for a $65 million building campaign and a $21 million endowment campaign. Working closely with executive leadership and the board of directors, Sandy has extensive experience in board recruitment and engagement, creating a heightened culture of philanthropy in the organization.
Previous positions include serving as Director of Special Gifts for The Field Museum of Chicago and Managing Director for Court Theatre at the University of Chicago, providing leadership for fundraising and operations.
Sandy received her undergraduate degree from the University of Illinois at Chicago. She has been active with several professional and community organizations, including Women in Development and the League of Chicago Theatres, and has presented at conferences and workshops for the Association of Fundraising Professionals (AFP), ADA 25 Advancing Leadership and the Arts and Business Council of Chicago.
